Our fifth award goes to Dr. Niels Ryberg Finsen (1860-1904), a notorious Danish physician and scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for contribute to the treatment of many diseases with concentrated light radiation.

Did you know that Dr. Finsen’s Pick’s disease was responsible for his investigations on light?

I suffered from anaemia and tiredness, and since I lived in a house facing the north, I began to believe that I might be helped if I received more sun. I therefore spent as much time as possible in its rays.

Did you know that in Copenhagen there’s a memorial to Finsen entitled Mod lyset, that means Towards the Light? It shows a standing naked man flanked by two kneeling naked women reaching up to the sky and symbolized his medical theory about light. Pretty amazing, don’t you think?
