What is Ma Huang?

Ma huang, also known as ephedrine, is a shrubby plant that has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It is mentioned in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing , one of the three foundation books of Chinese medicine written around 100 AD.

  • Botanical Name: Ephedra sinica Stapf., Ephedra intermediaSchrenk et Meyer, or Ephedra equisetina Bge. Family: Ephedraceae (ephedra).
  • Other names: Ephedra, yellow horse, yellow astringent, pinellia, etc.
  • Parts Used: Stems
  • Constituents: Alkaloids (including ephedrine, norephedrine, methyl ephedrine, pseudoephedrine), tannins, saponin, flavone, essential oil.
